best sulphate free shampoos

For years, I battled with dry, brittle strands that seemed determined to snap at the slightest touch. At first, I blamed it all on my relaxer treatments and those impulsive at-home dye jobs that left me looking more like Chucky than Beyonce – I probably should’ve left it to the professionals!

Even after I took the plunge and did the big chop, embracing my natural curls with all their glory, my hair still wasn’t living its best life. It took me way too long to discover the real culprit lurking in my shower routine, those sneaky sulphates in my everyday shampoo.

I had no idea that this common ingredient was basically staging a daily rebellion against my hair’s happiness, but once I cracked the code, there was no looking back – it was time to revolutionise my hair care game with sulphate-free shampoos.

What Are Sulphates?

You know that satisfying sudsy lather you get when you’re washing your hair? That’s mostly thanks to sulphates.

They’re basically the cleaning powerhouses in many shampoos – specifically sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and sodium laureth sulfate (SLES).

Think of them as the enthusiastic but sometimes overzealous cleaning crew for your hair.

The Good, The Bad, and The Bubbly:
  • Sulphates are amazing at their main job – removing dirt, oil, and product buildup from your hair (maybe a little too amazing…)
  • They’re super cheap to produce, which is why they’re everywhere
  • The thing is, they can be too good at cleaning, stripping away your hair’s natural oils along with the dirt

According to Gretchen Friese, a certified trichologist, the problem with sulphates is that they “may strip away too much moisture and leave the hair dry and possibly damage it”.

Why Should You Care?

If you’ve ever stepped out of the shower feeling like your hair is squeaky clean but somehow also as dry as the Sahara, sulphates might be the culprit. They’re particularly harsh on:

  • Curly or natural hair (moisture is our friend!)
  • Sensitive scalps (hello, irritation)
  • Already dry or damaged hair (we don’t need any extra drama)
  • Colour-treated hair (goodbye, expensive dye job)

“For those with colour-treated hair, sulphates can also strip and dull your hair colour,” says Jennifer Korab, a professional hairstylist.

It’s important to recognise that every person’s hair or scalp sensitivity is different and therefore might not necessarily respond the same or as harshly as others.

Most people can use products containing SLS without worrying about skin or scalp irritation,” says Dr Stefanie Morris, Dermatologist & Medical Director at European Dermatology London.

In fact, there are many good quality shampoos that do contain sulphates like the Tea Tree Special Shampoo from Paul Mitchell and Organic Nourish and Repair Shampoo from Mádara that are loaded with deeply nourishing, hydrating and conditioning ingredients that will still leave your hair supremely clean and velvety smooth even with sulphates in it.

Even though sulphates are pros at removing all the gunk and junk from your hair, if your scalp and strands are showing signs of sensitivity, it might be time to ghost those sulphates and swipe right on gentler, sulphate-free alternatives.

Here’s a round-up of the best sulphate-free shampoos.
