Sometimes a good bedroom is a simply designed one - without all the unnecessary decorative bits and pieces.

A minimalist bedroom would opt to showcase space rather than the stuff in it while incorporating clean lines and subtle sophistication.

  • Minimalist interior design was conceptualised by The Bauhaus, which was a design school established by architect Walter Gropius in Germany in the 1920s.

This design is driven by the idea that “less is more” and follows the principle that form follows function.

The “minimalist” term has been used to describe this pared-down aesthetic in other topics too such as fashion and arts.

But it’s more commonly used in the context of interior design and contrary to what you might believe - many celebrities love to plainly decorate their homes without all the extraness too, just take a quick look at these…

So, if you want to achieve this look in your bedroom, here are 14 minimalist bedroom ideas that will inspire you.

1. NEUTRAL PALETTE

Neutral hues like putty, cream, and light greys are perfect for a minimalist bedroom. In colour psychology, these neutral shades promote a sense of serenity and calm.

Even when these colours are mixed together through clever layering and texture, they are not brash or loud colours that will do your eyes in!

2. ALL-WHITE EVERYTHING

Apart from having to keep an all-white bedroom supremely clean (all you’ll see EVERYTHING!) having everything in all-white is the ultimate space-widening illusion.

This soothing yet crisp shade works best with a few pops of another colour added in or you might find it to be a little monotonous.

Maybe try layering different textures for bedding, and rugs, and throws in different shades of white too.

3. SLEEK STORAGE OPTIONS

If you truly want minimal space, you’ll need some clever storage options to reduce clutter. Hiding storage under the bed is an easy way to store shoes, spare sheets, or any other bits and pieces you’d rather not have on display.

Other storage ideas for a minimalist bedroom include getting a headboard with built-in storage or choosing nightstands with drawers.

4. SIMPLE BEDDING

You really don’t have to go all-out with bedding! Keep the style and pattern simple or just go for a solid neutral colour.

Don’t clutter the bed with unnecessary cushions and excessive pillows that - let’s be honest - you’ll never use! They’ll only make the room look far busier than it needs to be.

5. ACCENT WITH BLACK

Black may seem harsh but black can maximise the cosiness of a minimalist bedroom.

Black accents are dramatic, elegant, and effortlessly blend into neutral walls. Try adding black-framed prints, a black four-poster bed, and/or cushions with black piping for an effective way to incorporate the rich tone of black without crossing into the maximalist territory.

6. GO BOHO

In designing your minimalist bedroom, you may not consider the boho look, which is an eclectic mix of colours, textures, and patterns.

But when you add a few subtle elements like a rattan lampshade, tasselled or pom-pom throws, patterned cushions, and a jute rug in warm neutrals, you can create a unique combination that is both bold and simplistic.

7. USE TEXTURE INSTEAD OF WALL ART

It’s always tempting to add a bit of wall art or pictures to a bare wall, but adding ribbed panelling is a great way to give the walls some character and create a cosy cocooning vibe.

Paint them in trendy emerald green or duck egg blue for a colourful and refreshing finish or keep it simpler with warm colours like mocha brown or oatmeal putty.

8. SCANDINAVIAN MINIMALIST

In addition to being airy, minimalist, and pared-down, Scandinavian decor can also be rustic and characterful.

Modern minimalist decor can be a bit boring without some character, so Scandinavian design introduces warmth through wood and other textures and incorporates some playful colours.

9. ADD PAPER LAMPS

Adding some paper lamps can make the room feel light and airy.

Paper lamps emit a softer glow than normal lamps, creating a calmer and more serene atmosphere, which is exactly what you need to fall asleep.

10. ADD SOME GREENERY

Some small plants not only add subtle colour to minimalist decor, but one or two plants can actually help to clean the air and reduce stress levels! Sounds cool right?

Plants can pretty much work with any decor style and the refreshingly green hues will go beautifully with neutral walls and other materials in the room.

In a minimalist bedroom, small plants work best.

11. IN THE ZONE MONOCHROME

It’s undeniable how classic black and white look together, and having this dynamic duo in a minimalist bedroom gives a striking yet balanced appeal.

You might expect these two colours to be at opposite ends of the spectrum to clash, but in this case, opposites attract!

12. TRY JAPANDI

Japandi design is a great option if you’re going for solid muted colours and clean lines. This hybrid design is a fusion of Japanese and Scandinavian interior decor.

Both styles have a focus on functionality, simplicity, and natural aesthetics.

Japandi design strikes the perfect balance between sleek and cosiness - perfect for a minimalist bedroom.

13. USE YOUR COLLECTION AS ABOVE-BED ART

It’s always a great idea when you’re on a budget to use items you already have at your disposal rather than buying new items.

And if you fancy a bit of DIY, there are lots of cool and innovative ways to create hat galleries as seen in an article on Apartment Therapy.

Hanging things like hats on the wall is an awesome solution for functional storage too!

14. MID-CENTURY FURNITURE

You can usually identify mid-century modern furniture by its medium-dark wood, mismatched textures, and angled legs.

With these incorporated into a minimalist design, the overall look is neutral, yet has the iconic edge of a classic design that spans more than 50 years!
