Before maximalism came minimalism, and now here we are again, back to maximalism. Currently, many millennials and gen-z are reaching that point where minimalism looks too drab. I mean, how could it not? So many aspects of our lives have been reduced to atoms thanks to this unwavering virus Covid-19.

Right now, every interior design junkie, (myself included) needs things that stimulate us enough to the point where we feel some sort of normalcy, whatever that may be.

Luckily for all of us, Ancient Greece has really been having a moment lately, first in fashion and now in interior design. And the Pinterest gods were right when they said Hellenism would be making a comeback in 2022!

Cue the resurrection of Gianni Versace's Greek god-sent interior designs from the late 1970s: Hellenism. The Hellenistic homeware trend was popularised in the late 1970s by Italian fashion designer Gianni Versace so it’s no surprise that the look is synonymous with the over-the-top opulence of the '80s, where life was a party that nobody wanted to end. But this late trend is now enjoying a resurgence thanks to a new generation of designers putting their spin on the look.

Not catching on? Think ancient Roman busts, vines, fresh flowers, brass, palm leaf imagery, white pedestal bowls, and oversized urn-shaped vases. If you're still not convinced, think of any classic Hollywood film set in Ancient Greece or Italy, you know the ones. The sets are dripping with gold leaves, carvings, and sculptural elements.

Hellenism is about being unapologetically extra - like eating fresh grapes off a vine while beautiful women fan you with palm leaves - and enjoying life's finer things.

What is Hellenistic Design?

The Hellenistic design (or Greek chic) celebrates the Greek gods and goddesses' strength, resilience, and individuality while simultaneously bringing out the carefree spirit of Ancient Greece with its vibrant colours and bold patterns. Corinthian columns, marble statues, and olive wreaths are all common motifs in Hellenistic design.

The great thing about the Hellenistic style is that it can be as subtle or bold as you want it to be. And right now, the question is, 'how bold can you go?' Everyone from famous Hollywood home decorators to self-proclaimed interior designers is taking this trend and running with it and I must say, there is something unique about the blend of grace and extravagance. Hellenism is very in-your-face, but the bold colours are relaxed by the more muted decor, which is why they work with each other so well.

How to Incorporate Hellenistic Homeware Trends into Your Space?

With its mix of bold colours, patterns, and textures, Hellenistic design is the perfect way to add a little bit of Ancient Greece to your home. So, if you're looking for a way to spice up your space, look no further than the Hellenistic Revival.

With that said, you can go all out and cover your walls in a hand-painted mural of Ancient Greek gods and goddesses frolicking on Mount Olympus or keep it simple with some well-placed greenery, ceramics, and brass accents.

If you're dying to add a little bit of Ancient Greece to your home, there are plenty of ways to do it. Start by adding some greenery to your space. Potted plants and hanging vines are a great way to bring the outdoors in. Then, add some bold patterns and colours with Hellenistic-inspired fabrics and wallpapers. Finally, don't forget the finishing touches: Ancient Greek-inspired art, sculptures, and vases.

If you're feeling inspired to jump on this trend, here are some more tips to get you started:

Channel Ancient Greece

Start by finding some key pieces that represent Ancient Greece. This can be anything from a simple urn-shaped vase to a work of art with an Ancient Greek theme.

Think about emulating the badass Greek gods and goddesses in your decor and choose the ancient Greek heroes you admire! You can use Greek sculptures and busts as statement pieces, and jewellery and candle holders, so they're both aesthetically pleasing and functional for your space.

Envision Mediterranean Colours

Incorporate some elements from the Mediterranean into your design. This can be anything from blue and white tiles to a Moroccan-inspired rug.

Also, incorporate bold colours like yellow, blue, and green while calmly complimenting them with soothing creams, off-whites, and beiges to make you feel like you're sitting at a restaurant patio overlooking a stunning view of the Mediterranean sea.

Add Corinthian Order

The Corinthian Order is an architectural style that is all about luxury and opulence. Incorporate some elements of this style into your design with brass objects, rich fabrics, and marble accents.

Don't just decorate your space; decorate your walls. Corinthian crown moulding and trim will set your area apart from the rest. Don't forget the Corinthian columns either - these can be used as actual architectural elements in your home or simply as decorative accents.

The intricate details of the crown moulding and Corinthian columns will draw your eyes, making you feel like the room is bigger and like you're at a Roman temple.

Emulate Neoclassical Features

The Neoclassical period was all about being grandeur, so go big or go home. This is your time to get adventurous and bold with your style and use large-scale furniture, chandeliers, and gilded mirrors.

Neoclassical design is the perfect way to make a statement in your home. It's all about choosing bold, dramatic pieces that will wow your guests. So go for it! Choose that oversized armchair or chandelier that you've always wanted.

Incorporate Hellenistic-Inspired Art

Ancient Greek art is characterised by realism and idealism. This is the perfect opportunity to add some unique artwork to your home.

You can find Hellenistic-inspired art at many different retailers, or you can even create your own. If you're feeling crafty, try your hand at making a mosaic out of colourful pieces of glass or tile. Or, if painting is more your thing, consider creating a mural or canvas painting inspired by Ancient Greek art.
