I wasn’t the biggest Barbie superfan as a child, but I have always loved pink! Pink hairbands, nails, lip gloss, and even pink pedal pushers—remember those?

So I am enjoying the resurgence of the Barbiecore aesthetic in fashion and lifestyle trends, which, of course, coincides with the new highly anticipated ‘Barbie’ movie starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, which is due to hit cinemas on 21st July 2023.

Whether you’re a die-hard Barbie lover who wants to transform your wardrobe into a giant bubblegum or simply want to dip your toes into some pastel pink nail varnish, this article has you covered.

What Is The Barbiecore Aesthetic?

The Barbiecore aesthetic embodies all things Barbie, from her confident and adventurous spirit to her fabulous style!

It’s a trend that celebrates bright colours, glitter, and all things glamorous, taking cues from Barbie’s playful and chic image.

Think retro vibes mixed with modern touches, embracing feminine silhouettes and eye-catching details.

Barbiecore leans on nostalgia, bringing back memories of childhood and the fun associated with Barbie’s world.

It is likely that Gen Z might be a tad too young to understand how iconic Barbie really is!

And yet, that hasn’t stopped many of them from flooding our social media feeds with everything from Barbie-inspired home decor, beauty, and of course, fashion, so there’s been no shortage of inspiration.

But how hard you pink-power your life is really up to you!

Do you prefer bold statement pieces like over-the-top flouncy ruffle dresses?

Or subtle nods to Barbie’s iconic style like small signature pink hoop earrings like these ones from Hugo Kreit?

Either way you go, any amount of pink is sure to add a touch of whimsy and fun to your wardrobe!

  • The Barbiecore trend has been around for a few years now, but it really gained popularity in 2020 as people looked for ways to add some fun and colour to their lives during the pandemic.

The trend was inspired by the iconic Barbie doll, which has been a beloved toy for generations of children.

The Barbie doll was first introduced in 1959, and her signature look - blonde hair, blue eyes, and a pink outfit - quickly became iconic.

Over the years, Barbie has evolved to reflect changing fashion trends and cultural attitudes, but her signature pink colour and playful style have remained a constant.

The Barbiecore trend takes inspiration from all of these different iterations of Barbie, from the vintage 1950s look to the modern Barbie with her diverse range of body types and skin tones.

  • If you’re seeking some ideas on how to infuse a bit of Barbiecore into your everyday life, hopping onto social media could be just the ticket!

There are plenty of influencers and bloggers who have embraced the trend and shared their tips for incorporating pink and playful elements into your fashion and lifestyle.

One of my favourite Barbiecore influencers is @barbie.laraa on Instagram, who shares photos of stunning Barbie-inspired fashion, you can also follow hashtags #pinkhome and #pinkaesthetic for fun ideas on how you can add pink to your living space.

Key Elements Of Barbiecore Fashion

A splash of pink is the ‘pink-standard’ when it comes to Barbiecore.

From pale pastel shades to bright neon hues, pink is the colour that ties the trend together.

But Barbiecore is about more than just pink! Here are all the key elements you’ll need to get the look, both inside and outside your wardrobe.

1. Mix It Up

Barbiecore embraces playful, girly elements like ruffles, bows, and frills.

Think puff sleeves and tulle skirts—pretty much anything that adds a touch of whimsy and playfulness to your look.

But don’t forget to put your own personal spin on it too!

Barbie dolls in different styles and themes

Even Barbie dolls are depicted in many different styles, from various professions, outfits, and themes, reflecting different cultural trends, fashion eras, and career aspirations.

So mix and match elements to create a look that feels uniquely yours!

2. Incorporate Pink Into Your Wardrobe

If you’re not used to wearing pink, no worries!

Start by trying out some simple pieces like a pink jumper or blouse until you feel a bit more adventurous.

Once you’ve got your pink items sorted, think about how to style them.

Pink goes with pretty much anything, from classic black and white to bold reds and purples. So, don’t hesitate to mix and match until you find your perfect look.

Experimenting is all part of the fun!

3. Accessorise With Barbie-Inspired Items

Another cool way to rock the Barbiecore trend is with Barbie-inspired accessories.

Think jewellery, handbags, cushions or phone cases—anything that screams Barbie!

When it comes to these accessories for your home or wardrobe, you’ve got a ton of choices. You could go for a pink faux fur throw to brighten up your bedroom, or maybe a handbag shaped like her dream house!

A pop or sprinkle of pink here and here can liven up your home and outfits too, even if they’re mostly neutral.

Picture a black mini dress paired with pink satin heels or a bow-detail white blouse and high-waisted jeans paired with a pink clutch bag, gorgeous!

4. Embracing The Barbiecore Lifestyle Through Self-Care

In addition to fashion and accessories, Barbiecore is also about having a playful, girly attitude towards life.

Pink-powered self-care practices that make you feel pampered and joyful can be blended into your daily routine.

Taking a bubble bath with pink bath bombs, doing a face mask with a Barbie-themed sheet mask, or painting your nails with a fun pink polish are just some of the simple ways to treat yourself and feel fabulous!
